In the heart of Sydney’s CBD, bordered by Pitt Street Mall, Market Street and Castlereagh Street, Westfield Sydney is undergoing redevelopment. The redevelopment will integrate Westfield Centrepoint, the Centrepoint Convention Centre (Imperial Arcade and Skygarden), provide a new office tower at 85 Castlereagh Street and an extensively modified tower at 100 Market Street. As part of a masterplanned curatorial program for the development, artist Dani Marti has proposed an integrated wall artwork for the façade on 100 Market Street, announcing a key entry point to the mall.
Dani Marti, a Spanish-Australian sculptor, is most recognized for his tactile abstract sculptural reliefs, often realised large scale as sculptural wall treatments. In his gallery practice, Marti predominantly works in soft materials, skilfully manipulating thick ropes & weaving them into rhythmic patterns that appear as oversized fabric swatches. From a distance, the viewer can admire the geometric order of his minimalist constructions, however, on closer inspection the subtle complexities of Marti’s works emerge. Among Marti’s most recent woven commissions are Ed Filipowski-Mark Lee, untitled, New York (2007) and Nunez Martin Collection, Infanta Margarita (European Monarchs), Canary Islands, Spain (2006).
The Centrepoint façade will achieve this woven aesthetic with panels of cast glass-reinforced concrete. Marti creates a visual play between form and material, pushing the viewer’s perception as the concrete appears to warp and weave in flowing patterns across the surface. via Marker
A panel of woven rope was made using strands of selected thickness & texture. It was then coated with rubber & encased in a frame of timber & fibreglass to create a mould for casting panels of glass reinforced concrete. These are then tiled on the wall to create the final effect
